Yesterday evening there was an electronic sign near my house put up by the Ventura Police, warning residents there had been a rash of car burglaries in the area. This morning I receive a text from my oldest son saying his tools, ipod, and a nice flashlight had been removed from his truck. He did not remember if he had left his window down.
It is a sad statement of the way things are today. That people will help themselves to your stuff, but much of this can be prevented by doing 3 easy things. 1. Never leave valuables in your car at night, especially in plain sight. Cell phones, i-pods, i-pads, e-readers, and laptops should be removed. 2. If you must leave valuables in the vehicle, such as tools, lock them in the trunk or hide them under the seat. 3. Always lock your car and make sure the windows are rolled up. You could always lock your pit bull in the car at night but I once saw a 911 Porsche that had the interior destroyed by the owner's dog. I guess the dog didn't enjoy sleeping on the cold leather seats. Be careful out there! Jim O I drive my 15 year old son Eric to high school everyday, and because he is beginning to think about getting his license, I often have a running commentary on how those around us are driving. I am wanting him to think about driving defensively. To think about staying out of trouble instead of driving how you want and hoping the other guy drives the way he is supposed to.
I have observed that a lot of people are in a big hurry and because of this they drive hoping they can find an opening to squeeze into and are not courteous to others. I have pointed out to Eric several occassions where an accident should of happened but did not because the other driver was paying attention and was able to avoid a collision. One morning it happened and right behind us. A high school student in a nice older pickup decided to make a u-turn in the space between us and the car following behind but it apparently did not occur to him that cars might be coming in the right lane. He swung through right in front of a car in the right lane, and was t-boned. It did not appear anyone was hurt but there were 2 car loads of kids who were late for school. Another common thing we see is drivers trying to squeek through on a yellow light or not stopping at a crosswalk with a crossing guard and kids in the middle of the street. The world has always been a dangerous place but it seems it is more so now. Another part of this is the cars we drive today are so easy to drive fast. With anti-lock disc brakes, electronic stability control, radial tires, and all-wheel drive we can zip around and avoid many accidents. When I was a teenager cars did not stop quickly, if you were going 65mph on the freeway there was a lot of wind noise and rattles, and the only distraction you had in the car, unless your girl friend was with you, was which side of the 8-track you wanted to listen to. Being in the insurance business, I see how much traffic citations cost as well as how they effect your insurance rates. And if you have an accident, you almost never come out even with all the headaches they add to your life. So I encourage you to not be in a hurry when you drive nor to drive where the other guy has to be looking out for you. In the long run your life will have fewer problems and you will get to spend more of your money on the things you really want. Customer Service. Where has it gone?
5/17/2011 Every where I turn it seems the customer service people are trying to complicate my life, not make it easier. I have a theory about how this all happened. From 2001 to 2007 no matter what you did it turned out great. Businesses were making lots of money. Our home's value only went up. Tax revenues to the government at all levels only came pouring in. Then it stopped. People had to start looking at how much was in their paychecks instead of borrowing the new appreciation that showed up in their property value. Businesses had to go back to competing for customers and government suddenly realized that their revenues would not only go up. But what had happened during those years is everyone forgot how to serve the customer; the person who was actually paying and expecting something in return. Public servants have forgotten the meaning of the word 'servant'. Customer service people have forgotten the meaning of the word 'service'. Companies have lost sight of what their 'service' looks like from their customer's perspective. In John Mauldin's book, Just One Thing, Michael Masterson's chapter is titled 'The Winner's Rule', and this is the one thing he thinks is most important in business as well as life. He writes, In every relationship you get into - every business, social, or personal transaction - make sure that the other person gets as much benefit from it as you do. When considering your own advantages and disadvantages in taking any course of action, consider those of everyone else involved. In my business and in my life, I try to live by "The Winner's Rule". Sometimes my services are not the least expensive but I want the service to be the best for my clients. This isn't always easy because insurance is inherently negative as no one wants to think about having an accident or dying prematurely. It is much more exciting to spend money on a new car, but in our modern world insuring ourselves has become a necessity. Let each of us work to get the Service back in Customer and Public Service. |
