That is not until I took a trip to Oklahoma to see my daughter graduate from college a few weeks ago. It was the day of the graduation and it rained for a few minutes in the morning but that was the extent of the storm.
Around 6:30 pm it began to thunder and lightening as if it was going to build into a nice storm, but when the heavens opened, instead of pouring down rain, it began to pour ping pong ball size and larger hail stones! Yikes!! It poured for 6 to 8 minutes and when it stopped the ground was white with 3 to 4 inches of hail!
The hail had stripped the leaves off the trees, damaged the roofs of many of the homes, and it completely dimpled the entire top side of my rental car! The photo above shows the damage to the hood, and the roof and trunk looked the same.
Being a California boy I have never experienced anything like this but I was glad on this day that I had insurance as the hail damages came to $4,000.
The one bright spot is my youngest son informed me the car was now a "green" vehicle. He had studied that a golf ball travels further because of the dimples in its cover than it would with a smooth cover. www.howstuffworks.com/question37.htm As the car's skin was now dimpled like a golf ball he reasoned it was more aerodynamic so should get better gas mileage.
The rental car company however did not see it his way. They still wanted to be paid for the damages. I also learned that sometimes we protect ourselves against possible events which never happen but occasionally something beyond our control occurs and we find ourselves happy that we were prepared.
