Where Do You Go When You Need Information?

I am one of those "guys" that thinks he can fix anything so I actually enjoy having things break down, (as long as they don't all break at the same time!!!) Having the internet is a great asset. For example I have learned how to lay tile by watching someone do it on YouTube.

But sometimes I run into problems that I cannot solve and the answer is not Googleable and the people on the product "help Line" have obviously never worked on their product.

I was having trouble with my daughter's 1974 Beetle. It would run fine for 2 - 3 days then get cranky where it would not start. I would mess with the ignition and it would run fine for a few days then would not start! I could not resolve the problem and soon, not only was the bug cranky but my daughter was cranky as she would get stranded, and I was getting cranky too.

I was certain the trouble was in the distributor so I took it out and went to see Larry of Larry's Foreign Car Repair on Sherwin Ave in Ventura. (Larry is my go to guy for all air cooled VW problems) The moment you step into Larry's shop you can tell he loves VW's. I told him what trouble I was having, he tinkered with the distributor for a few minutes, and discovered what the problem was.

Another time my dryer was making some awful noises so I got on the internet to look at a schematic and determined what part needed to be replaced. I ran to my normal appliance parts store but they did not have the part I thought I needed. They referred me to Hester's Appliance & Repair on Saviers Rd. in Oxnard. I ran over there and told Mr Hester what part I needed. He asked me what the dryer was doing and when I told him he said the problem was with a different part. I purchased the part Mr. Hester recommended and he was right! If I had purchased the part I went out looking for, I would have spent more money than I did and my dryer would have still made those awful noises.

So when you need information, where do you go? In today's internet world we are inundated with information, but how much of it is any good? There are many self proclaimed experts on the internet but how many of them really know what they are talking about? I have discovered that finding someone with true knowledge and expertise is rare and that peculiar problems are impossible to get resolved on the internet. You can buy cookie cutter insurance on the internet but how many of our lives are like everyone else? Life happens and when it does it is good to have a trusted source for information. My office tries to be that regarding insurance so if you would like a friendly review of your coverage give me a call.
